Department of Human Services

During the month of October 2016, the Department of Human Services Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR) organized four walks on three islands to raise awareness of the importance of the white cane for those who are blind, deaf and blind or visually impaired.

The walks garnered support and attention from across the community and even the news media. The Lions Club supported the walks again this year, in addition to DVR and community organizations like the National Federation for the Blind. Additionally, the Garden Island highlighted the walk in Līhu‘e.

On O‘ahu, DHS Director Pankaj Bhanot and current House Committee on Human Services Chair Dee Morikawa joined DVR and community members for a walk around the Capitol and downtown Honolulu. Highlights of this walk, including Dir. Bhanot’s comments to the crowd, are available in the video below.
