The Department of Human Services (DHS) General Assistance (GA) program has increased monthly benefits for individuals and couples receiving temporary economic assistance.  Effective April 1, 2014, single individuals receive $348 per month, an increase of $29. Couples receive $469 per month, an increase of $39.  The purpose of the GA program is to ensure that eligible adults receive at least a minimally adequate standard of living.

The General Assistance program is funded through an annual block-grant, appropriated by the State legislature.  Based on the number of individuals participating in the program, the DHS adjusts monthly benefit amounts throughout the year to remain within the block-grant appropriation.

To be eligible for GA, adults between the ages of 18 and 64 must have little or no income, not qualify for any federal assistance, and be certified by a DHS medical board as unable to engage in any substantial employment.  To maintain eligibility, their assets may not exceed $2,000 for a single person and $3,000 for a couple.
